The fishery enjoys the combination of 4 miles of bank space with many inlets and bays to offer a great variety of fishing. Easy access and gentle sloping banks are ideal for all levels of ability Well stocked with fin perfect rainbows, blues and brown trout from its own fish farm. Many of these fish weighing up to double figures.
Grassholme is a pretty reservoir set in picturesque scenery of Upper Teesdale, North Pennine Dales. It's not a large reservoir at 57 hectares (140 acres). But, it is deep off the dam wall going down to 38 metres (120ft). This deep water ensures that Grassholme fishes consistently even during the warm summer months. During the early season as the spring air warms the water, the shallows and the stream mouths are some of the best places to fish. Fishing is only from the bank. There is no boat fishing.
Stocking: Grassholme enjoys the luxury of its own local fish farm where most of the weekly stockings of fin perfect rainbows, blues and browns up to double figures are taken.
Dates & times: The season is from 16th March to 30th November and fishing times are from 8am to 9pm or sunset (whichever is sooner). November 9am until 3pm only. The shop is open every day in season from 8am until 5pm. Fishing commences at 8am once anglers have signed in.
Try it days: During the season on Tuesdays and Saturdays Derwent reservoir offers fishing tuition. This can be for novices or anglers keen to improve their skills in the art of both fly fishing and multi-bait fishing. The price ranges from £15 for a junior and £30 for an adult and includes all tackle hire, rod license and three hours of tuition.
Fly: Spring and Autumn best area North Shore spillway, Low Rigg Bank. Best methods slow sink line with Cat's Whisker, Orange Fritz or Hot Tailed Dawsons Olive. Summer best area Low Rigg up to Pebble Beach, Dam Wall, Grassholme Bank. Best methods floating or sink tip line with Viva on the point, Bibio in the middle and Kate McLaren on top dropper.
Multi-bait: Spring and Autumn best area Witchs Hat to disabled platform. Best methods yellow or Pink Power bait eggs popped up above a swim feeder of Magic Dust. Summer best area Easter Bay, Dam Wall, West End Car Park Bank, Lodge Front. Best methods Red or Orange Flying C spinners, float fished worm or on sunny day ledge-ring Rainbow Power bait.
There is a purpose built disabled platform suitable for wheelchair anglers fishing using the fly and multi-bait. This is located at the main car park next to the visitor centre and near the dam. Summer water levels please phone the shop. Wheelchair accessible toilets and parking.
There is a well stocked shop open daily from 8.00am. You will find all the fishing equipment you need to get you started from scratch including a range of bait and flies for the day. Equipment hire service is available from the shop, anglers must check availability of equipment prior to arriving at Grassholme. Snacks, ice creams and hot and cold drinks are available daily along with a range of leisure items for the entire family to enjoy their day out. Fishing starter packs are available from the shop which includes everything you need to enjoy a fantastic day's fishing. Our friendly team of rangers will be on hand to offer you advice and assistance.
Non Fishing Activities:
Our visitor centre has an interactive exhibition for children. There are 2 seasonal recreational areas with picnic sites and wonderful views of the water. Car parking is free. Toilet facilities with disabled access are available.. There is a circular footpath around the lake providing magnificent views across the water and a pleasant picnicking area next to the visitor centre.
Online Permits: All permits are for a day only and catch limits must be shared if more than one person is fishing. All anglers aged 12 or over must also be in possession of their own valid individual Environment Agency rod license, which if not already held can be bought from the shop.
