Fontburn offers top class fishing throughout the season for thefly and bait angler and is stocked by its on-site fish farm. With a rainbow trout record of 26lb it's well worth a visit. Within easy reach of Tyneside, Alnwick and Rothbury, it enjoys a reputation as one of the most popular, friendly, family oriented fisheries in England.

Fontburn is located in a beautiful corner of Northumberland countryside close to the Simonside Hills. At 87 acres this is one of Northumbrian Waters smaller reservoirs, also one of the regions oldest, opened in 1901. A popular fishery regularly stocked with home reared browns and rainbows. The fly angler has the distinct advantage at Fontburn, walking the entire bank relatively easily, taking a cast in convenient gaps between the bait anglers sitting in their pegs. Fishing is only from the bank. There is on boat fishing
Stocking: Fontburn enjoys the luxury of its own local fish farm where most of the weekly stockings of fin perfect rainbows, blues and browns up to double figures are taken. (twice weekly during summer months). Rainbow trout record of 26lb.
Dates & times: The season is from 16th March to 30th November and fishing times are from 8am to 9pm or sunset (whichever is sooner). November 9am until 3pm only. The shop is open every day in season from 8am until 5pm. Fishing commences at 8am once anglers have signed in.
Try it days: During the season on Tuesdays and Saturdays Derwent reservoir offers fishing tuition. This can be for novices or anglers keen to improve their skills in the art of both fly fishing and muti-bait fishing. The price ranges from £15 for a junior and £30 for an adult and includes all tackle hire, rod licence and three hours of tuition. Try it days are held at most of the reservoirs.
Fly Fishing Tips
Spring and Autumn best area South shore, Lodge Bank and Dam Wall. Best methods fast sinking line with Orange or Cat's Whisker Boobies. Medium sink line with Goldhead and Black or Orange Fritz. Summer best area North Shore and South Shore next to spillway. Best methods use a hot tailed Dawson's Olive on the point and small wets such as Black and Peacock Spiders on the droppers. Use a slow retrieve with a floating line; a Kate McLaren Snatcher is very reliable on the top dropper.Mulit-bait Fishing Tips Spring and Autumn best area around the disabled jetty and North Shore. Best methods ledgered Powerbait and worm cocktail. Summer best area South Shore and Dam Wall. Best methods Small Mepps or Rapala spinners. Float fished sweetcorn.
Disabled access: There is a purpose built disabled platform suitable for wheelchair anglers fishing using the fly and multi-bait. This is located on the North side of the Dam wall, close to the car park. Even as water levels drop, the platform can give good access to the water. Summer water levels check with the shop.. Wheelchair accessible toilets and no parking charge for vehicles displaying a blue badge or for coaches.
Shop: There is a well stocked shop open daily from 8.00am. You will find all the fishing equipment you need to get you started from scratch including a range of bait and flies for the day. Snacks, ice creams and hot and cold drinks are available daily along with a range of leisure items for the entire family to enjoy their day out. Fishing starter packs are available from the shop which includes everything you need to enjoy a fantastic day's fishing. Our friendly team of rangers will be on hand to offer you advice and assistance.
Non Fishing Activities
There is a seasonal recreational area with a pleasant picnic area next to the visitor cente, with wonderful views of the water. Car parking is free. Toilet facilities with disabled access are available. There is a footpath around parts of lake providing magnificent views across the water. At the shallow end of the North shore there is a nature reserve.
Online Permits: All permits are for a day only and catch limits must be shared if more than one person is fishing. All anglers aged 12 or over must also be in possession of their own valid individual Environment Agency rod license, which if not already held can be bought from the shop.
